Heating and Cooling Your Home
Heating and cooling account for the biggest portion of your total energy bill. So when it’s time to replace your system, get the most efficient equipment possible or one that has the ENERGY STAR® label. If you’ve insulated your home, installed new windows, or made other energy improvements, you may be able to get a smaller sized heating or cooling unit, and smaller units use less energy, and cost less to operate. Your thermostat controls how much heating or cooling you use, and how high your energy bill will be. When you’re away or asleep, you should set your thermostat back to save money. If you don’t want to have to remember to do this, a programmable thermostat will remember for you. A programmable thermostat can save you about $100 per year. Check your air conditioner or your furnace filters each month. A dirty filter causes your system to work harder (using more energy) to push air through to heat or cool your home. Clean filters will extend the life of your heater and air conditioner.

Use Fans: In the summer, air conditioning is probably the biggest portion of your energy bill. Fans create a “wind chill” effect, allowing you to use your air conditioner less, while still feeling comfortable. Click here to learn more. |
